Dan Empfield is the publisher of Slowtwitch.com, the source for triathlon and multisport news, tips and technology. However, that doesn’t do his achievements justice. He is a designer of all things triathlon – the original wetsuit, the prototype for today’s triathlon and time trial bikes and F.I.S.T. , a tri bike fit system. He was, also, instrumental in crafting the set of USA Triathlon bylaws that reformed voting procedures, and redrew USAT voting regions.

A native of California, Dan earned his Bachelor of Science in biology from University of Nevada (Reno), competed in his first triathlon in 1978 and in the first Ironman in 1981. From there it is history, Dan founded Quintana Roo in 1987 to manufacture the first wetsuit for triathlons. In 1989, he designed the Quintana Roo Superform bike to meet the specialized needs of triathlete cyclists. Slowtwitch came into being in 1999 and by 2003 he had developed the F.I.S.T. Tri Bike Fit System.

F.I.S.T. was designed for the unique bike metrics of tri and road bike manufacturers and fitters – “stack and reach.” Many modern fit systems employ the protocol, mechanics and metrics that are the backbone of the F.I.S.T. fit system. While Dan has given fit clinics and workshops all over the United States and Europe, you can find most of the time conducting workshops at his ranch in the San Gabriel Mountains, Xantusia. Purely Custom fit bikes and fitting tools are a part of the F.I.S.T. tri bike fit system.
